Offering stunning views of the South Lakeland District fells and countryside, Cartmel has grown up around its famous 12th Century medieval Priory Church. It is a special place where ancient history and tradition mingle effortlessly with the present day.
Cartmel is home to a wide variety of traditional Lakeland inns, tea rooms and cutting edge gourmet restaurants, including the internationally acclaimed Michelin Star restaurant, L’Enclume.
Cartmel Races
Set against the backdrop of the beautiful English Lake District, it is possible to sample national hunt racing in its most original format at Cartmel racecourse.
With its party crowds and funfair, Cartmel Races rekindles the social gathering tradition of the original steeple to steeple chases. A great experience to enjoy if you’re lucky enough to be in the area on race days.
L’Enlclume
Simon Rogan’s most renowned restaurant in Cartmel – L’Enclume – was named the number one restaurant in the UK by The Good Food Guide 2020 and holds two Michelin stars and five AA Rosettes.
Offering a ‘farm to table’ dining experience like no other, a visit to this restaurant, just 10 minutes from Lakeside, will be a truly memorable occasion.
Cartmel Priory
Steeped in culture and rich with history, the Priory is found at the very heart of Cartmel village, surrounded by picturesque English countryside, and gives a warm welcome to everyone who comes to experience it.
There are many unique features that make the Priory what it is today, found both inside and outside the church. The unique square belfry tower constructed diagonally across the original tower is the only one like it in the UK.
