Things to Do

Flitch Way – only a few minutes walk from the Manor. This is a newly surfaced path, which starts at Tilekiln Green and runs for approximately 8 miles to Great Dunmow. It passes by the edge of Hatfield Forest (with foot access to the forest), through Takeley and Little Canfield. It is the old spur railway line from Bishop's Stortford to Braintree, which was used mainly for transporting bananas to and from Geest Bananas, which is situated in Bacon End, near Great Dunmow. The path is suitable for pedestrians, cyclists, horse riders, pushchairs, and prams.

Hatfield Forrest is approximately 1000 acres of ancient woodland and was a royal hunting estate in Tudor times. It was later owned by the local Houblon family and then passed to the National Trust, who own it now.

Bishop's Stortford Golf Club is approx 1 mile away. It is a traditional members' club and is situated on the eastern edge of Bishop's Stortford, town. Day visitors paying a green fee have access to the full range of playing and clubhouse facilities for the duration of their visit. Visitors must have an official handicap and are requested to observe the club dress code on the course and in the clubhouse. Visitors are welcome at all times when the tees are not reserved or the course not closed. In practice this means that access at weekends may be restricted, and Tuesday morning is Ladies Day.
